What is Proposition 65?

Prop 65

Proposition 65 requires businesses to provide warnings to Californians about significant exposures to chemicals known by the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.  These chemicals can be in the products that Californians purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment. By requiring that this information be provided, Proposition 65 enables Californians to make informed decisions about their exposures to these chemicals.

Proposition 65 also prohibits California businesses from knowingly discharging significant amounts of listed chemicals into sources of drinking water.

Proposition 65 requires California to publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. This list, which must be updated at least once a year, has grown to include approximately 900 chemicals since it was first published in 1987.

Proposition 65 became law in November 1986, when California voters approved it by a 63-37 percent margin.  The official name of Proposition 65 is the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986.

Some Products sold by Betts Industries Inc. contain chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.   Examples of these chemicals are listed below.

Hexavalent Chromium – Chromium is used as an alloying element in Stainless Steels and is listed as causing Cancer and causing Developmental Toxicity and Male and Female Toxicity.  https://www.p65warnings.ca.gov/fact-sheets/chromium-hexavalent-compounds-chromium-6-chromium-vi

Lead and Lead Compounds – Lead is found in solder, electronic components, brass and copper alloys which may contain up to 4% lead as an alloying element. Lead is also used as an alloying element in some carbon steels (i.e. C12L14, 41L40 etc.). Lead is listed as causing Cancer, Developmental Toxicity, Male and Female Reproductive Toxicity. https://www.p65warnings.ca.gov/chemicals/lead-and-lead-compounds

Nickel (Metallic) – Nickel is used as an alloying element in Stainless Steels. Nickel (Metallic) is listed as causing Cancer and listed as under consideration for causing Developmental Toxicity and Male and Female Toxicity. https://www.p65warnings.ca.gov/chemicals/nickel-metallic

Bisphenol A (BPA) – BPA is found is such things as polycarbonate plastic, some plastic water bottles, and bags.  BPA is listed as causing  Female Reproductive Toxicity.

Tetrafluoroethylene – PTFE (Teflon) is a polymer of Tetrafluoroethylene. Tetrafluoroethylene is listed as causing Cancer. https://www.p65warnings.ca.gov/chemicals/tetrafluoroethylene

Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) – DEHP belongs to a family of chemicals called phthalates, which are added to some plastics to make them flexible. It is found in some plastic and PVC to make them softer flexible and durable.  Some electrical wiring contains DEHP.  DEHP is listed as causing Cancer, Developmental Toxicity, Male and Female Reproductive Toxicity.   https://www.p65warnings.ca.gov/fact-sheets/di2-ethylhexylphthalate-dehp

Petroleum products – Petroleum products contain chemicals that are on the Proposition 65 list because they can cause cancer and/or birth defects or other reproductive harm. https://www.p65warnings.ca.gov/fact-sheets/petroleum-products-environmental-exposure-industrial-operations-and-facilities
