Fusible and Frangible Plug

The Betts’ brass Fusible and Frangible Plug provides dual protection with both a thermally activated and a mechanically activated single-use emergency shut-down feature for use with a cargo tank’s pneumatic or hydraulic system.

The frangible extension provides a sacrificial shear section, that when mechanically broken, functions as a remotely actuated means of closure for the emergency and vapor recovery valves.  The device must be securely mounted by the 1/8” NPT threads; the remainder of the device must be visible and accessible so it can be readily broken by an operator’s hand.  The Fusible Plug (FP15003BR) is included in the end of the Fusible and Frangible Plug assembly.  If the fusible plug is subjected to elevated temperatures, the solder will melt and relieve line pressure to facilitate closing of the emergency and vapor recovery valves.

When mounted correctly in a properly designed pneumatic or hydraulic system, the Fusible and Frangible Plug fulfills the requirements of US DOT 49CFR§178.345-11(b)(1)(i) and (iii) and CSA B620-20 clause 5.6.12.3(b), (c), (e) and (f).

Note: Do not paint the face of the fusible plug.  Replace if solder is extruding past the face of the plug.
