Aircraft Refueling Market

CASE STUDY:

Betts’ New Market Team collaborated with a customer to develop an improved water drain valve solution for the Aircraft Refueling Industry. Working with the customer, limitations of previous water drain designs were recognized.  Existing 1” valves were manufactured out of brass material and pneumatic options were not available.  This project aimed to eliminate brass, which can oxidize and create sediments, as the body material, provide pneumatic functionality and improve overall design performance of the valve. To achieve this, the New Market Team interfaced with Betts’ Design Engineering team to develop a new valve.

Introducing Betts’ 1” Water Drain Valve, EV1XAETM-AAVB:

This valve meets HM183 requirements for an internal self-closing stop valve and is ideal for use as a water drain/sampling valve. It is manually operated with a pull cable and offers a 1” NPT male threaded inlet and ¾” NPT female threaded outlet. Additional options include pneumatic actuation or a 1” NPT female outlet. The valve also meets the shear section requirements of 49CFR §178.345-8 and is tested per TTMA RP84.

This new valve design satisfies the customer’s material preference and provides a range of updated design and performance improvements including:

  • Aluminum construction
  • Increased flow
  • Full drainage with .75″ eccentric outlet
  • Outlet line more than 1.25″ closer to tank shell
  • Shear section moved above actuation point
  • Ease of repair

Additionally, the valve is offered with the following options:

  • E-coated body
  • Fusible link
  • Retrofit pneumatic actuator
